  • In This Moment lead singer Maria Brink is one of the few women to lead a popular metal band. She also has a huge social media presence they was overwhelmingly supportive in the years after the band formed in 2005, but had drawn some surly detractors by 2014 when they had become a headline act. "Sex Metal Barbie" is typical of the names her haters would call her. In this song, she confronts them head-on.

Speaking to Revolver magazine, Brink said: "I wanted to take all the negativity that has come my way and turn it into something powerful for me to utilize."

"I've stopped reading social media in the last few years because I've realized the mean things people say can be toxic. So I've learned to become numb to it," Brink added. "I think it's better to just do your art and follow your heart."

"I don't embrace the yucky stuff. But for this song, I decided to embrace it. I said, 'I'm gonna go read all the really mean things that people say about me. All the rumors.' So the whole band got online and started Googling," she continued. "And then we wrote the song around all the awful things people had to say about me."
  • Brink expanded on the song's meaning to Rocksverige: "That is basically people making fun of me. Everyone on the internet these days, is so filled with hate," she said. "People just write horrible things, so I stopped reading social media a few years ago. Once in a while I can read it and actually laugh at it because it's so silly it's funny, but if you read too much it can become toxic."

"I let go of it, but we wanted to take a song and take everybody's hate and flip it back onto them and make it something empowering," Brink continued. "It's kinda like making it a reflection back on them, so I used all the hateful, mean things and made it into one of my favorite songs we've ever done."
  • The song's music video was directed by Maria Brink. "Directing it was a liberating experience," Brink told Loudwire. "When you write music that you are very passionate about being able to bring the visual aspect of it alive with the music is what ties everything together. 'Sex Metal Barbie' is all about rising above hate. I used other people's hatred to create this song and concepts."

"I really wanted this video to convey that other people's perceptions of us are just their own twisted and warped views," the vocalist added. "I wanted a sarcastic and delusional visual to bring this video alive. Lastly I want to thank all the people who feel compelled to express negativity toward us for all the inspiration. I couldn't have done it without them."

  • Jeffery Wayne Smith from AlI could not possibly like this entire story enough to convey my feelings about it. Everyone feels something, and anyone can feel anything. But there's always something out there that you'll feel more profoundly.............. well, at least until that very instant that there's not. The actual peak of it. And in that very same moment you cannot possibly know, due to having the entire future ahead of you. Yet at the sane exact time; In This Moment; You just know. I know how that will sound to most people, but I just cannot seem to relay my thought pattern any better than that chickenscratch I just wrote. And regardless; it's just one of those things that you'll never fully understand until you experience it firsthand. But when you know; you just know, ya know? Lol, just wanted to say thank you guys for all the masterpieces you've created of a glimpse into my soul. You guys rock! I'm out. Peace!
