Songfacts®:

  • Vocalist/guitarist Elijah Hewson (son of U2's Bono), bassist Robert Keating, and drummer Ryan McMahon originally formed a band in 2012 at St. Andrews College in Blackrock, Dublin. They decided to call themselves Inhaler three years later, just before guitarist Josh Jenkinson joined the outfit. This song is both the title track and opening song on their debut album.
  • This was one of the first songs Inhaler wrote. Hewson told Apple Music about coming up with the riff back in 2016. "I remember playing it in the room together for the first time and the drums being a hook. That was like, 'Oh man, that's catchy.' The first time we wrote something catchy."
  • First released as a single in March 2019, Inhaler updated and re-recorded the track to make it sound like the rest of It Won't Always Be Like This.
  • Lyrically, the song takes on different meaning for different listeners depending on their life stage. For Inhaler, the title served as a mantra for the band as they crafted their debut album during the coronavirus pandemic.

"There's a sense of optimism on this album and the song 'It Won't Always Be Like This' is the main catalyst for that," Hewson said. "We kept coming back to that title."
  • It Won't Always Be Like This debuted at #1 on the UK album chart. In doing so, Inhaler became the first Irish band to hit the top survey with their first record since The Script did so with their self-titled debut in 2008.
