Songfacts®:

  • Songwriters and performers have at times fallen foul of the law, including in the modern age, but this is not always due to overzealous censorship. Although rap artist Ishmael McLean included the F-word in his song "Wrong Team" it was not the profanity that landed him and his co-defendants in court but lyrics like:

I can't wait for the snitch to drop
I still show up at his wake just to see him off

After recording the song, lyricist McLean and his fellow rappers posted a video of it to YouTube with links to witnesses in the murder of 24-year-old Jason Johnson.

In November 2009, he was jailed for five years for perverting the course of justice and possessing ammunition. His co-defendant and fellow rapper Rowan Simon received a two-and-a-half-year sentence for perverting the course of justice. McLean, Ryan Espirit (who also performed on the song), and four others had previously been cleared of murder. >>>
