Songfacts®:

  • This duet with English actress Sienna Miller was recorded for the "Bringing Out the Dead" episode of the TV series The Vampire Diaries. The song soundtracked the scene where Elena tells Matt that Caroline's father is dead.
  • Savoretti explained to Q magazine why he recruited Sienna Miller for the song. "I'm a fan of Serge Gainsbourg's duets, I thought it would bring a punch," he said. "She has this amazing ability to recite any Dylan song, lyric for lyric."
  • Jack Savoretti told the Mail On Sunday's Event magazine how he recruited Sienna Miller after he was impressed by her rendition of a Nancy Sinatra tune. "She got up and sang These Boots Are Made For Walkin' a cappella at a Burns Night party," he recalled, "and I thought she not only had guts to do that but a pretty good voice."

"A few months later I was at a friend's wedding and Sienna was there singing along to Dylan again, every song, every word," Savoretti continued. "A few days later I sent her a song, Hate & Love, then told her I was going into the studio the following day. She turned up and we got the whole thing done [recorded a duet] in an hour."
