Songfacts®:

  • This song was written by Jacques Brel as "La Valse à Mille Temps." The English translation was made by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, and is one of many Brel songs to feature in the musical Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris (which was also made into a film) although it first appeared in the quaintly named O Oysters!!

The play debuted in New York in 1968, and ran for more than four years. The film was released in Canada on January 25, 1975, in New York the following month and in France the following January. Jacques Brel died in France of lung cancer in October 1978.
  • Although "Carousel" is a good song and a fair translation, most critics will agree that Brel's original recording cannot be bettered. >>>
