Songfacts®:

  • James Bay originally wrote "Save Your Love" in the middle of lockdown as a message to himself. He's determined to stick up for himself and not let others bring him down.
  • After becoming a father for the first time to daughter Ada Violet, the song changed meaning for Bay. "Now, I think about that song as a sort of advice song," he told GRAMMYS.com. "And I think, 'I wonder if Ada will get something from that one day, because I wouldn't want her to waste herself on somebody who wasn't worth it.'"
  • When Bay wrote the demo for "Save Your Love," he sent it to his A&R-guy, who is good friends with Finneas' manager. He learned that Billie Eilish's brother and collaborator, Finneas, is a longtime fan of his music and wanted to work with him on the track. They met on a Zoom call during lockdown, and Finneas told Bay he'd been in the audience at a promo event he did in 2016 - when he was still in school.
  • Finneas produced the track. Bay played the acoustic guitar and Finneas played all the other instruments (drum programming, piano, electric bass, synth bass, synthesizer).
