Blake recorded "Doesn't Just Happen" for his seventh album, Trying Times. Written between Los Angeles and London, the track is rooted in the broader thematic mission of the album: Blake grappling with a fractured, increasingly uncertain world and finding refuge in love through all its complications. On the album, love is never romanticized as easy; it is presented as resistance, effort, and survival.
"Doesn't Just Happen" is likely drawn from Blake's relationship with the actress Jameela Jamil. Blake and Jamil have been together since 2015, and their relationship has been the emotional engine of his music for years. He dedicated Assume Form (2019) entirely to her, tweeting "To @jameelajamil I love you and you are the reason this album exists."
For Trying Times, that creative partnership deepened even further: Jamil served as executive producer, and Blake has said he "feels lucky that she's my partner in life, but also in music."
The British rapper Dave joins Blake on the track. His verse nudges the song outward, widening the lens from romantic devotion to the broader business of surviving modern life, before Blake gently pulls the track back into the intimate space he's made his own.

James Blake and Dave wrote the song with Dom Maker and Romeo Testa. Blake originated the track during the sessions for Dave's The Boy Who Played The Harp album, and it eventually found a home on Trying Times. "While we were writing Dave's last record, The Boy Who Played The Harp, I started making a track called 'Doesn't Just Happen,' said Blake. "I knew this one was one for me; I sent it to Dave to put his spin on it and as always, he made it his own. It's one of my favorite moments on the album."
Dominic Maker is one half of the London electronic duo Mount Kimbie, alongside Kai Campos. He has been a central creative partner to James Blake since Blake's 2019 Assume Form album. Beyond Blake, his credits include Jay-Z, SZA, Rosalía, Travis Scott, Young Thug, and A$AP Rocky, and he earned a Grammy nomination for his work on Blake's 2021 record, Friends That Break Your Heart. He was signed to Blake's own CMYK Group.
Romeo Testa is a music producer and songwriter who records and releases under the alias YouthXL and is also part of the CMYK Group creative circle.
Trying Times is Blake's seventh album. When it debuted at #3 on the UK Albums Chart, it became Blake's highest-charting album joining his self-titled 2011 debut (#9), Overgrown (2013, #8), Assume Form (2019, #6), and Friends That Break Your Heart (2021, #4) in the Top 10.
