Songfacts®:

  • This is a typical James Bland "coon song" and is actually sung "In de ebening, by de moonlight" etc. It was published in the 1946 collection The JAMES A. BLAND Album of OUTSTANDING SONGS... wherein it was arranged by Charles Haywood and copyrighted by the publisher Edward B. Marks. The song itself is dedicated to Neil Moore, and was originally published in 1880 by Hitchcock's Music Store.
  • According to Arnold Shaw in Black Popular Music In America, "In The Evening By The Moonlight" was introduced by Sprague's Georgia Minstrels. The opening bars to the First World War hit "There's A Long, Long Trail" are identical. >>

  • Kieran from Brisbane, AustraliaThis is a great song, I heard it on Boardwalk Empire. If you wanna hear long forgotten tunes from the early 20th century BE does a superb job
of introducing them to an modern audience(and its one of the best TV shows ever). I was totally ignorant of the likes of Irving Berlin,Henry Burr
,Billy Murray and the era of Tin Pan Alley and ragtime until I started watching it.
