You Could Have Been True

Album: Songwriting Masters (1881)

Songfacts®:

  • "You Could Have Been True" is an early James Bland love song; though he composed the music, the words were written by Mannie Friend, whom he met at Howard University. It was a visit to her birthplace that inspired his monster hit "Carry Me Back To Old Virginny." This joint composition is dedicated to Mr. Theodore Allen, and was published in the 1946 collection The James A. Bland Album Of Outstanding Songs wherein it was arranged by Charles Haywood and copyrighted by the publisher Edward B. Marks. >>>
