Songfacts®:

  • This acoustic swamp-blues number is the title track from American Country artist Jamey Johnson's fourth studio album. The song is sung from the unusual perspective of two pawnshop guitars hanging on a wall. One, which has been owned by various country legends is voiced by Music Hall of Fame member Bill Anderson. Johnson represents the other, which has led a more modest life, having laboured in small town barrooms. In spite of their different backgrounds, the pair commiserate with each on how they both crave to return to the stage.
  • The Guitar Song is a 25-song double album with thematically linked sets of songs divided into two parts; a 12-track CD; titled "Black Album" and a 13-track CD titled "White Album". Johnson explained his reasoning behind the double disc record, saying "The original idea was always to do a double album. It is an album that is a tale. The first part is a very dark and sordid story. Then everything after that is progressively more positive, reassuring and redemptive."
