Songfacts®:

  • JaR is Jay Graydon and Randy Goodrum, who are top songwriter/producer/session musicians that got together to record as a duo. Graydon produced most of Al Jarreau and Manhattan Transfer's hits, and Goodrum wrote "Oh Sherrie" and "You Needed Me." Goodrum talks about this song: "It's sort of a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac, where this guy has not got the gift of gab with women. And matter of fact, he is a bull in a china shop. And so he has this friend, Donovan, who knows exactly what to say in a bad situation, just like in Cyrano. That's why I say Cyrano was chump change, it's like this guy puts Cyrano to shame."
