  • The story of this song starts in high school, where Jason Michael Carroll began dating 15-year-old Wendy Phillips. He was 18 at the time, so they kept this relationship quiet. When Jason left school, he joined the Marines, but kept seeing Wendy. They were an under-the-radar couple for two-and-a-half years before they came clean to her parents, who responded by sending Wendy away to Bob Jones University in South Carolina (they lived in Youngsville, North Carolina) and forbidding her to see Jason.

She met a guy there and got married. Meanwhile, Jason met a girl back in North Carolina and had two kids with her, Gavin and Savana, before getting married and having a third, Story.

Years later, Jason and Wendy were both separated. Jason's sister stayed in contact with Wendy and brought her to one of his shows in Greensboro, where they rekindled their relationship. "I saw her, jumped off stage, walked up to her, and was like, 'Look, I think about you all the time,'" Carroll said in our 2015 interview. "'I'm sorry things went the way they did. You never have to speak to me again, I just want to get this off my chest.' I hugged her, got on stage, and our very first song that night was Kenny Chesney's 'Just Don't Happen Twice.' We started talking after the show - we clicked like we hadn't missed a day."

Jason and Wendy got married and had a child, J.W.
  • Carroll wrote this song on the tour bus between radio station shows in California with his guitarists, Glen Mitchell and Tim Galloway. They got in a discussion about songwriting, and Jason explained that you need to "Make sure you tell a story that connects with you, and that you think would connect with somebody else." He paused XBox and they came up with the song based on Jason's story about reconnecting with Wendy. A rep from their label was on the road with them, and she loved the song. She had them play the song at the radio station the next morning and called back to the label, which had Jason return to the studio and record the song for his first album.
  • Carroll's first his was "Alyssa Lies," which was released as a single in 2006 before he wrote this song. When the album Waitin' in the Country was issued in 2007, "Livin' Our Love Song" was released as the next single. It became his highest-charting song on the Hot 100, making #52.
  • The music video was directed by David McClister, who also did The Band Perry clips for "If I Die Young" and "Chainsaw." The video opens with a radio playing Carroll's first hit, "Alyssa Lies."
