Songfacts®:

  • Jelly Roll has carved out a niche for himself with his raw, confessional lyrics that dive into the gritty realities of his past struggles with alcohol and drugs. In this track, the rocker-turned-country crooner takes on addiction and the hollow promise of materialism, baring his soul with unflinching honesty. You can almost feel the weight of his words as he sings:

You try to be my friend
    But you're blowing smoke
Oh, and now, I ain't scared of
Tellin' you where you can go
    'Cause I know
    You're nothing but a liar
  • Jelly Roll wrote the rock track with Ben Johnson, Ashley Gorley and Taylor Phillips.

Johnson and Gorley frequently write together. Their other collaborations include Parmalee's "Take My Name" and Nate Smith's "Bulletproof."

Gorley and Phillips also teamed up with Casey Brown and Jelly Roll to pen the singer's previous single, "I Am Not Okay."
  • Jelly Roll first sang "Liar" at the Grand Ole Opry in April 2024. He followed it with performances at the 2024 ACM Awards, as well as on The Voice and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Tennessee rapper/singer eventually released the song on August 2, 2024.
  • Jelly Roll performed "Liar" during his debut appearance on Saturday Night Live on September 28, 2024, along with "Winning Streak." It was a significant moment for him, as it was the premiere episode of the show's 50th season.
  • Jelly Roll became the second act after The Pretty Reckless to send their first four entries to the top of Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart when "Liar" reached #1 on the tally. His previous three leaders were "Dead Man Walking," "Need A Favor" and "All My Life" with Falling in Reverse.
  • "Liar" was just the second time a song hit #1 on both Billboard's Country Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay charts. The first was another Jelly Roll song, "Need A Favor."
