Songfacts®:

  • "Like Jennie" is a self-assured, high-energy ride through the cosmos of pop stardom. Released on March 7, 2025, as the fourth single from the K-Pop star's debut solo album Ruby, the song is an exercise in self-celebration, a thumping declaration that there is, in fact, no one quite like Jennie.
  • Jennie co-wrote the song with frequent Ariana Grande collaborator Tayla Parx and Amanda "Kiddo A.I." Ibanez. To add a little linguistic flair, there is also a rap section featuring Korean lyrics penned by Zico, with whom Jennie previously collaborated in 2024 on the track "Spot!"
  • American producer Diplo created a high-energy soundscape with his signature concoction of frenetic beats and eclectic soundscapes. Diplo has also worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Madonna, and Justin Bieber, and is a member of the electronic dancehall project Major Lazer.
  • Directed by Lee Han-gyeol, the video opens with Jennie in a ruby-red astronaut suit aboard a spacecraft, symbolizing her readiness to explore new artistic realms. The visual prominently features the color red throughout, aligning with the album's title, Ruby, and symbolizing passion and empowerment.
  • Curiously, this is not the first time someone has recorded a song about a Jenny (or Jennie) for an album called Ruby. Macy Gray did precisely that with "Just Like Jenny" a track on her 2018 Ruby album. Her version is a raspy, upbeat affair brimming with playful storytelling. Despite the eerie similarity in names, the two songs are totally unrelated.
  • Kiddo A.I., Tayla Parx and Diplo wrote the song at Diplo's house in Malibu. It was Kiddo's first time working with Diplo and Parx; she was very nervous because she's a huge fan of both.

"When we got there, we went through a couple of different tracks, but nothing made sense," she recalled to Billboard. "Then Tayla and I were like, 'We need something hard and just so in-your-face. This is Jennie's song, right? So let's make a song called "Like Jennie."' Jennie freaked out. She loved it."
