Songfacts®:

  • This sassy, hip-shaking anthem finds an independent Jennifer Lopez rejecting traditional gender roles.

    I ain't cooking all day
    I ain't your mama
I ain't gonna do your laundry
    I ain't your mama

Lopez explained: "Guys have this tendency, once they love you in the beginning and you're the hottest woman on Earth, and then all of a sudden, it's like, 'Okay... where's my food?' It's like, 'What!? Are you kidding me? Take me out! What are you doing right now?' But it's a really fun song and everybody seems to be responding to it really well so I'm happy about that."
  • The song was co-written by Meghan Trainor, who also contributed backing vocals. "When dreams come true," the "All About That Bass" singer tweeted.
  • Lopez premiered the song on the series finale of American Idol on April 7, 2016.
  • The track was produced and co-written by Dr Luke, which on the face of it was a natural collaboration as Jennifer Lopez is signed to Sony division Epic Records and Sony also co-owns the producer's label Kemosabe Records. However, at the time of the song's release, Dr. Luke was embroiled in a high-profile legal battle with Kesha, over claims he sexually abused her - allegations he strenuously denied. J-Lo found herself caught up in the crossfire of the controversy as online commentators worldwide questioned why she chose to down such a toxic songwriting path, especially with a tune that has such a pro-feminist message.
  • Speaking to Digital Spy, Meghan Trainor claimed that Lopez didn't know that Dr. Luke was behind the beats when she agreed to perform the tune. "I texted her the song and she had no idea. She thought I did it alone by myself at my house, which a lot of people think because I do do that," said Trainor. "I sent it to her and said, 'Do you like the song?' and she said, 'I love the song, my kid loves the song — he's made me play it five times already so I know it's a hit. When can I cut it?', so I said immediately, 'Whenever you want!'"
