Songfacts®:

  • Jim Croce was never a truck driver, but he could relate to life on the road, as he traveled the country trying to make it as a musician. In this song he plays a trucker hoping his rig holds up long enough to get him to Baltimore, where he can deliver his load. Along the way, he has to look out for the annoyances every trucker deals with: weigh stations and radar traps.
  • An early Jim Croce song, "Big Wheel" was part of his second album, which was credited to him and his wife, Ingrid. She co-wrote most of the songs with him, but this one was written solo by Jim. Croce's big breakthrough came with his next album, You Don't Mess Around with Jim in 1973, which went to #1 in America.
