Songfacts®:

  • The August 14, 1976 issue of Melody Maker describes "Tall In The Saddle" as "a vituperative condemnation of empty machismo [which] creates its unusual mood through the judicious use of unexpected and quite sophisticated chord changes."

Unexpected, yes, unusual, definitely. Although the song was most definitely not inspired by the 1944 John Wayne film Tall In The Saddle, it certainly spits bullets.
  • The live version released on Joan Armatrading's Steppin' Out album runs to 6 minutes 31 seconds, and was produced by Glyn Johns. >>>
