Songfacts®:

  • "Maya" was written by Thai songwriter Sukie Kamol Sukosol Clapp; it was recorded by his countryman, the rapper Joey Boy, in 1998 on his CD Bangkok Boy.

In the West, and especially the US, rap is noted for its profanity. In the Far East, profanity has a different yardstick. "Maya" contains a sample of a recitation from the Qur'an. Sukie Kamol said that when he sampled it, he thought this was people singing. When it appeared on a 2005 compilation, Moslems noticed, and complained. This led to Sony withdrawing the record. >>>
