Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from The Search for Everything is a mellow ode to weekend romance. The song premiered on November 17, 2016 – it was John Mayer's first original single since 2013's duet with Katy Perry, "Who You Love."

Mayer said: "I think it's a very cool vibe. I think this is a single you can bring with you. I've had so much dancing to it in my kitchen, and it's yours now."
  • Mayer told the story of the country-tinged soft-rocker in a Facebook Post:

"I was playing a different guitar part for an overdub and all of a sudden this riff came out and I went… 'Please press record,' and all of a sudden it went into bullet time. That's my favorite thing to do, is to come home at night with something I didn't know existed before.

When I wrote 'Love on the Weekend,' I wrote it really fast—it's like the same thing that happened with 'Gravity.' You go, 'Alright, that's an okay one, that's a B-lister,' and then you wake up the next day and you go, 'Oh. Oh, that's something, let's finish this up today.' And each time you move through it, put a lyric in, and sing it again, it sort of grows and grows and grows."
  • John Mayer told Rolling Stone the idea for the lyrics came to him one day when he arrived at Capitol Records' iconic building on Vine Street, which is at the foot of the hill bearing the Hollywood sign.

"It's just a f---ing hill," he remembered thinking. "But everybody decided to congregate around this hill. This is where the magic is. It got me thinking how, in California, we like going from one hill to another hill. And the reason I love LA is because it's the world's greatest backdrop for love. There is a culture here of the lovers' getaway, and most of my jealousy as a single man is about not being able to go to the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur or the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara."
