Songfacts®:

  • Six years after announcing their split, The Jonas Brothers made their reunion public when they dropped "Sucker" on March 1, 2019. The trio's previous release was "First Time," a single taken from the band's Live album in 2013.
  • The rollicking pop-rock jam is about an infatuation.

I've been dancing on top of cars and stumbling out of bars
I follow you through the dark, can't get enough

The lovesick brothers are so obsessed with the girl it makes them do crazy stuff like dancing on top of cars. Still, they are proud to be suckers for their love.
  • The three Jonas Brothers wrote the urgent song with Ryan Tedder. As well as being the frontman of OneRepublic, Tedder has also written hit tunes for the likes of Beyoncé ("Halo"), Adele ("Rumour Has It"), Leona Lewis ("Bleeding Love").
  • The song was produced by Louis Bell and Frank Dukes. The two producers have also contributed towards many of Post Malone and Camila Cabello's hits.
  • Shot in the UK by director Anthony Mandler (Rihanna, Eminem, Taylor Swift), the video finds the brothers enjoying a lavish party at England's Hatfield House with their leading ladies. The clip starts with Joe's fiancee Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones' Sansa Stark), and Kevin's wife, US reality-TV personality Danielle Jonas, watching the trio as they start singing the song. Nick's actress wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas then makes a dramatic entrance in a full ball gown. From then on the three couples indulge in plenty of dancing and feasting around the lavish estate. Look out also for Joe's DNCE bandmate, Jack Lawless, on drums.

Hatfield House, which is about 30 miles north of London, is the home of the 7th Marquess of Salisbury. The huge country estate has served as a location for numerous movies, including acting as Anne, Queen of Great Britain's home in The Favourite.
  • The song debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not only did it mark the Jonas Brothers' very first chart-topper, but it was also the first ever #1 debut for a family group. The group's previous chart high came in 2008, when "Burning Up" peaked at #5.
  • The Happiness Begins album was released on June 7, 2019 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 414,000 units, of which 357,000 were pure album sales. Those sales were boosted by a deal that offered a ticket to Jonas Brothers' 2019 arena tour to anyone who purchased the album. It was the biggest pure sales week for an album since Taylor Swift's Reputation set in 2017.
  • Nick Jonas has admitted in the past that one talent he doesn't have is whistling. That is why when the Jonas Brothers perform this song live, it's Joe who handles the whistling duties.
  • This won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop in 2019. The JoBros recorded a performance of the song from the Stone Pony club in Asbury Park, New Jersey that was shown at the ceremony.
  • This was the most-heard song on US radio in 2019 with 3.49 billion audience impressions. Khalid's "Talk" was the #2 radio song of the year, with 3.32 billion.
  • Jonas Brothers use "Sucker" as their show closer.
