Songfacts®:

  • Jordan Davis wrote this song with Julia Michaels, Nicolle Galyon, Ross Copperman, and Emily Weisband. As the five started penning the tune they homed in on the idea of not having to pretend to be cool when you're with the one you love.

You don't have to be cool anymore
Show me the side that nobody else knows
Drop that act with your keys at the door
Lose the mirrors, I see through the smoke

Davis is telling his girl there's no need to put a front on anymore when she's with him. She wants her to let her guard down, and feel free to be true herself.
  • Once the quintet knew where they were going with the confessional song, the songwriters decided to make it a duet. Julia Michaels was the obvious choice to provide the female perspective during which she urges her guy not to "internalize everything that's wrong." Davis explained:

"If there's anybody, if there's an artist out there that is about as upfront and vulnerable as you can be, it's Julia. You see it in her songwriting, you see that in pretty much all of her music, she's very honest. And really, I feel like the root of this song is being who you are, and I feel like that's exactly what Julia Michaels is."
  • Julia Michaels is best known as a pop singer-songwriter, but has dipped her toes into country waters before. She was previously the featured artist on Keith Urban's 2018 single "Coming Home."
  • The video was directed by Eric Ryan Anderson, who also shot Davis' clips for "Singles You Up" and "Take It From Me."
