Songfacts®:

  • This emotional track is about overcoming the dark times and stepping back into the light. It was inspired by the rejuvenating effect for Josh Groban of walking to the Hudson River alongside his dog.

So, I walk down to the river
Where the troubles, they can't find me
Let the waters there remind me
The sun will be there when we wake

Groban explained to People that the "river" mentioned in the song represents hope. "Whenever we have dark times in our lives, whether we suffer from depression, or addiction, or anxiety, or even just having a really bad day, the worst is that it feels like we are suffering alone," he said. "In a world of billions connected by social media, far too many people feel this way and while the conversation is getting better, it's not talked about nearly enough."
  • Josh Groban wrote the song with:

Bernie Herms, who is the husband of CCM singer Natalie Grant. Herms' other credits include co-producing Hillary Scott & The Scott Family's "Thy Will," which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song in 2017.

Los Angeles-based producer and songwriter Toby Gad whose resume also includes hit songs by Beyoncé ("If I Were a Boy"), Fergie ("Big Girls Don't Cry") and John Legend ("All Of Me").
