Songfacts®:

  • Josh Ritter wrote and recorded The Beast In Its Tracks in the year and a half after his marriage to musician Dawn Landes had fallen apart. This song finds him attempting to show clemency to his former wife. He told MSN CA: "What I liked about that when I was writing it, there was a lot of forgiveness in it. It didn't feel full forgiveness. The attempt to forgive was there."
