  • If you'd met Judson Van DeVenter in the late 1800s, you might have thought he was one of those people who had it all figured out. Born on a Michigan farm in 1855, he had a degree from Hillsdale College, a gift for music, and an active role in his Methodist Episcopal church. Friends kept telling him he'd make a marvelous evangelist, the kind who could get half the congregation repenting before the offertory hymn.

Then, in 1896, at a revival meeting in Ohio, something shifted. In the home of evangelist George Sebring, Judson finally stopped wrestling and surrendered to God's call. Out of that moment spilled a poem about giving it all up for Jesus.

Enter his composer and singer friend Winfield Scott Weeden. Together, using the private verses DeVenter had written, they created "I Surrender All," first published later that year in Gospel Songs of Grace and Glory.
  • The hymn's text emphasizes total surrender to Jesus and is structured to reinforce this theme. Each stanza begins with "All to Jesus I surrender," and the refrain repeats "I surrender all" for a powerful effect. Singing all five stanzas, "I surrender" is repeated 20 times.
  • Judson wrote over 60 hymns, traveling with Weeden across the US, England, and Scotland, preaching and singing. But "I Surrender All" is the one that stuck. It became a revival favorite and has been closely associated with the Baptist evangelist Billy Graham, who cited Van DeVenter and this hymn as important influences in his early ministry.
  • The hymn has played a starring role in Oprah Winfrey's life. Desperate to land the role of Sofia in the 1985 film The Color Purple, she reached a moment of surrender by singing this hymn while running at a weight-loss camp. After "surrendering" her desire to God on the track, she experienced a sense of peace. Shortly afterward, Oprah received a call from director Steven Spielberg offering her the part. She's called it a defining spiritual moment ever since and had Faith Hill perform the hymn on her show years later.
  • "I Surrender All" has drawn its share of star interpreters. Deniece Williams won a Grammy for her 1986 recording on So Glad I Know. Glen Campbell recorded it twice in 1989 (Favorite Hymns and Home at Last). CeCe Winans' version on Alone in His Presence remains a gospel favorite, Michael W. Smith's interpretation includes a Spanish verse by guest vocalist Coalo Zamorano, while Amy Grant, Mahalia Jackson and Carrie Underwood have all added their voices to its century-long echo.
  • "I Surrender All" has appeared in several films and film soundtracks, often during pivotal or emotional moments reflecting themes of faith, surrender, or transformation.

In the 2013 documentary Twist of Faith, Toni Braxton’s rendition of the hymn plays a significant role on the soundtrack.

The hymn features in the 2023 film Southern Gospel, performed by Max Ehrich and Katelyn Nacon for the official soundtrack.

In 2024, a fresh recording by For King & Country, Hillary Scott, and Michael W. Smith was included on the soundtrack for Unsung Hero.
