Songfacts®:

  • Juice WRLD originally laid this song down in 2018. The Chicago rapper talks about his desire to see his girl "smile" as he battles his inner demons.
  • Originally titled "Sad," the song leaked on July 15, 2018 with similar lyrics and a more menacing beat by Juice's go-to producer, Nick Mira.
  • Juice WRLD first revealed his interest in making a record with The Weeknd when he tweeted on September 10, 2019, "Me and The Weeknd would make a diamond record." His wish came to fruition when The Weekend recorded an additional verse.
  • On his verse, The Weeknd talks about making sacrifices so his love interest can smile. This might mean The Weeknd has to let her go, as he doesn't want her to discover he's been unfaithful. The Toronto singer's lyrics have a similar theme to his After Hours track "Scared To Live," where he urges his lover to dump him for her emotional health.
  • At the start of his verse, Juice WRLD foreshadows his death.

Devil on my shoulder telling me I'll die soon
I don't really want that to impact you

Juice WRLD passed away on December 8, 2019, following an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine.
  • Juice had been dating Instagram influencer Ally Lotti since 2018, so it's likely she was the girl he wanted to see "smile." She tweeted following the song's release on August 7, 2020:

"Smile is a beautiful song; The Weekend is such a good person - checking to make sure I heard and loved it before anything, Very blessed have nothin but respect !!"
  • Nick Mira is credited as co-producer on the released version, alongside his fellow Internet Money beatmaker Taz Taylor and Florida native Cxdy.
  • An updated version of Juice WRLD's first posthumous album Legends Never Die featuring the song was also released alongside the single.
  • Directed by KDC Visions, the animated visuals show Juice delivering the song's message in front of a great purple sky and inside a snow globe while his girlfriend is seen reminiscing over old photos. The Weeknd later appears, emerging from a car wreck paralleling his "The Hills" clip. The visual ends with Juice's girlfriend looking out onto her street, where the rapper is standing with a pair of angel wings.
