  • Kacey Musgraves told Taste of Country Nights that she and frequent collaborators Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark agreed they needed a sad song for her Christmas album, so they set out to write one that would draw tears. "I cried when we wrote it, and I cried signing it," Musgraves said.

"Think about it. The day after Christmas is one of the saddest days of the year," she added. "All the paper is on the floor, your family is going home. It's kind of like this big moment has dropped and then it's just cold winter until New Year's."
  • Kacey Musgraves expanded on why she decided to write a sad Christmas song for her holiday album. "I was really excited to do to kinda tap into that unspoken, sometimes just melancholy like heaviness that we kinda go through when we think about people that were here with us and maybe aren't now, you know?," she explained. "We see our parents getting older and the passage of time and nostalgia is a very, it can be kind of a sad subject for me."

"I'm away from my family a lot, and you know Christmas is a time to reunite and see people that you haven't seen all year long and you realize that there's a lot of distance in the ins and outs of everyday you don't see each other," Musgraves added. "So, for me, tapping into the sad side of Christmas was also, it was actually weirdly, ironically fun."
