Songfacts®:

  • Written by Kacey Musgraves with Trent Dabbs and Tommy English, this funky, danceable track is a throwback disco song with an undulating bassline. Musgraves admitted to Beats 1's Zane Lowe that she was "on a huge Bee Gees kick" while creating Golden Hour and wondered what might happen if she mixed the Saturday Night Fever icons sound with country music:

"I was inspired by a thought of a world where all these ideas could come together musically," Musgraves said, "and still translate as good songs if I sat down and played them on my guitar."
  • To get on your high horse refers to someone who is behaving in an arrogant, overbearing or pompous manner. It comes from the fact that formerly people of rank rode on tall horses or chargers.

"We all know that character that is just a little high of themselves; they're just a little bit arrogant," Musgraves explained regarding this song. "I had this title sitting around for a long time, and I have my own ideas about who it's about. Everyone has that character in their life, and then I got to write it, and, oh my gosh, it is the most fun ever."
  • Other artists that have recorded songs about getting on a high horse include The Jim Jones Revue and Oasis.
  • Kacey Musgraves performed this song on the May 12, 2018 episode of Saturday Night Live during her debut appearance on the show.
  • Kacey Musgraves told Beats 1's Zane Lowe that she had "a freaking blast" writing "High Horse" with Trent Dabbs and Thomas Schleiter. "We all know that character that is just a little high of themselves; they're just a little bit arrogant," she explained. "I had this title sitting around for a long time, and I have my own ideas about who it's about. Everyone has that character in their life, and then I got to write it, and, oh my gosh, it is the most fun ever."
