• This stadium-sized ballad about a Bonnie and Clyde-style couple was co-penned by Zach Crowell, who has also worked with country artists Scotty McCreery ("See You Tonight") and Will Hoge ("Strong") as well as Christian rapper Lecrae ("Confe$$ions"). Crowell also co-produced the song with Urban.
• Chris McHugh played the drums on this song. McHugh was the stickman of Christian rock band White Heart in the late 1980s before becoming one of Nashville's leading session drummers. He has toured with Amy Grant and Garth Brooks as well as acting as Music Director/drummer for Keith Urban, playing on all of the Australian country star's studio albums.
• Zach Crowell penned the tune with Matt Jenkins and Sam Hunt. Urban said that as soon as he heard the demo he knew he had to cut it before anyone else did. "It's a beautiful song about a guy and girl, falling in love in the back of a cop car while they're getting arrested," said the singer. "I'd never heard a song written from this perspective before. But it was so visual, it was such a cinematic, visual song, and God, I love this song so much. I love the melody, the lyric of course, and I know this girl, and I know this crazy girl in the song too."
• The video tells the story of a real-life young couple taking a drive who get into trouble for trespassing. The clip was directed by John Urbano (One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful"), who Urban had never worked with before. "I had him pegged for this song, and I just loved his vision for this whole thing," said the singer. "There's certain songs that are written so visually that you can sort of see this whole unfolding… It was incredibly easy to shoot the video because it's just… there it is."
• This was the first song that Sam Hunt, Zach Crowell and Matt Jenkins wrote together. "We sat down, and Zach, he had a track that he had already recorded before I came in," Hunt recalled to Taste of Country. "So we sat there and listened to it, and it was this real pretty track that kind of sounded like it might be a heartbreak song or a love song."
  
  After hearing what Crowell brought to the table, Hunt stepped into the vocal booth and began freestyling the idea of falling in love in the back of a cop car. "So, the idea popped into my head. This story popped in my head. The image of a cop car had this little bit of delinquent charm to it," Hunt continued. "So we started talking about the story, and how it happened and how we can write a song about it. It seemed kind of left field at the time, but as we started talking about it, it sort of came together."
  
  Hunt added that the story told in the song actually happened, although the reason for being put into the cop car was "nothing too major; just made for a good story."
• Hunt noted to Taste Of Country that he still talks to the girl in the song and drew inspiration from her side of the story. "Actually … I talk to her a lot, and I'd ask her what she thought about this and what she thought about that," he shared. "So I had a female perspective to bounce things off of. She was my girlfriend at the time. She's a great, great girl."
  
  Hunt later revealed that the "Cop Car" girl is his off-and-on girlfriend Hannah Lee Fowler, who inspired much of his Montevallo album. In early 2017, the singer announced that the pair had got engaged.
