Songfacts®:

  • Dean Dillon, Hank Cochran and Royce Porter wrote this romantic song about a long distance relationship. It finds Keith Whitley telling the touching tale of a guy from LA who meets a girl in Miami named Amy. He returns to California but can't stop thinking about her. When she calls him and tells him she loves him, he immediately flies back to Miami to be with her.
  • Whitley recorded "Miami, My Amy" for his second album, L.A. to Miami. Released on January 27, 1986 as the second single from the album, it reached #14 on the Country chart, becoming his first Top 20 country hit.
  • Keith Whitley's career as a mainstream country music artist lasted from 1984 until his death from alcohol intoxication in 1989 aged 34. He recorded just two albums but charted 19 singles on the Billboard Country chart, some after his death. "Don't Close Your Eyes," "When You Say Nothing At All," "I'm No Stranger to the Rain," "I Wonder Do You Think of Me" and "It Ain't Nothin'" were all #1 hits.
  • "Miami, My Amy" is one of the most-covered songs in the Whitley catalog, with Daryle Singletary and Mo Pitney among the artists to deliver versions.
  • Thirty-six years after the song's release, "Miami, My Amy" found a second life on TikTok. It trended on the social-networking service after TikTokers used the track to soundtrack heartwarming, nostalgic videos, often connected by a kindly elderly person.
