Songfacts®:

  • Telescope is the third solo album from Kelley Ryan, the singer-songwriter who formerly recorded under the name astroPuppees. The album title was taken from the opening lyric of this song: "You're at the end of your rope, Don't need a telescope."

In a Songfacts interview, Ryan explained the significance of the title: "I looked up telescope in the dictionary and it describes a telescope as 'an optical instrument designed to make distant objects appear nearer, containing an arrangement of lenses or curved mirrors, by which rays of light are collected and focused and the resulting image magnified.' I think that's a pretty good metaphor for the way I like to write songs. Every pop, every bang, every chord, is meant to specifically focus on and magnify a very specific emotion or subject so you can really feel it. It heightens the very specific. Like I want to get down to the molecules of love. Also, I just like the way the word sounds."
  • "'Pulling For Romeo' is about hope," Ryan told AXS. "In Romeo and Juliet, his fake poison plan almost worked. Even though I know the outcome will be tragic, I'm hoping he will wake up and they will live happily ever after. I always pull for Romeo."
  • Like most of the tracks on the album, this features bass from Don Dixon, a songwriter and producer who co-produced REM's first two albums, and backing vocals from Marti Jones. The married couple often collaborate with Ryan. Other guests include horn player Jon Thornton and drummer/percussionist Jim Brock.
