Songfacts®:

  • This is yet another successful Kenny Loggins song to a motion picture, this time Caddyshack II. It's an intense rock song about a man pursuing a woman who thinks he's naive, but he has more savvy than she realizes. >>>

  • After the success of "I'm Alright," the song he wrote for Caddyshack, Loggins was apprehensive about writing another theme for the sequel. "I was a little skittish about trusting lightning to strike twice in the same place," he admitted in a 1988 interview. While Caddyshack II was a clunker, its theme song wasn't. It gave Loggins his final Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, proving once again that a movie doesn't have to be a hit to produce a hit song (a year earlier, his single "Meet Me Half Way" from Sylvester Stallone's arm-wrestling flop Over The Top went to #11).
  • With "I'm Alright," "Footloose," and "Danger Zone," Loggins became the first male solo artist to have three Top 10 singles from three different movies. He broke his own record when "Nobody's Fool" climbed to #8.
  • This is also the lead track from Loggins' sixth solo album, Back To Avalon. Despite the success of its singles, the album didn't sell well in the US. It was his first solo release that didn't earn an RIAA certification.
  • Loggins wrote this with Michael Towers, who composed the theme music to the '80s TV series Simon & Simon.

  • R.e.g from New EnglandThere's nothing in "I'm Alright" about "be the ball", Sara. Did you mean to say that line was not in that song? Or did you hear the line "no, no, cannonball it right away" as "be the ball"?

Actually, it's interesting that the two songs work in some of the dialogue from the movies. Chase did use "be the ball" in both. And "cannonball it" and "Cinderella kid" come from some of Bill Murray's dialogue in the first movie (specificially the scenes where Ty Webb and Carl Spackler meet and Carl give Ty the joint then tells him to cannonball it with some cheap wine/booze and the famous Cinderella story scene where Carl is cutting the flowers with the gardening tool while pretending to be golfing). "Nobody's Fool" seems to better incorporate it's movie, but I feel "I'm Alright" is more aimed at Danny Noonan and what's going on with him it the first movie.
  • Sara from Silver Spring, MdDann Huff played electric guitar on this not "I'm Alright". This includes the line "Be the ball" which was in the more successful Caddyshack theme "I'm Alright". The line was spoken by Chevy Chase who appeared in both movies.
