Songfacts®:

  • This blend of acoustic pop and house finds Kiiara breaking up with someone before the entire relationship goes too far.

Let's stop before it gets m-m-m-m-messy
Let's stop before it gets h-h-h-h-heavy
It's not too late to say you never met me
Let's stop before it gets m-m-m-m-m-m-mess

Kiiara said: "This song is something familiar to so many people. It's about ending it before someone gets hurt. Not getting into a relationship or calling it one because that's when you start to become emotionally invested. It ends up going nowhere because you're scared to feel those emotions. Falling for someone is scary and it's not something you anticipate, it just happens when you least expect it."
  • "Messy" was written by Los Angeles producer Noah Conrad with Sasha Sloan (Louis Tomlinson's "Just Hold On ," Camila Cabello's Never Be the Same") and newcomers Jacob Torrey and Roland Spreckly.
