Songfacts®:

  • Kongos is a South African rock band who are based in Phoenix, Arizona. They are all the sons of John Kongos, who is best known for his 1971 song "He's Gonna Step On You Again," which hit #4 UK and #70 US. The group comprises keyboardist and accordion player Johnny, drummer Jesse, bassist Dylan and guitarist Daniel Kongos.
  • This song was penned by Johnny Kongos. Dylan explained to Artist Direct: "It came about from him listening to a lot of that Kwaito music. The variations of style that the song went through were quite vast, but it always kept this Kwaito vibe. Johnny picked up the accordion on our first album, and it's going to be a centerpiece of the band forever."
  • This was used by the film Holy Motors in its official trailer.
  • The song was an early fan favorite when the band was opening for Linkin Park in South Africa. The United States, however, took more time to crack. "There was about a year-and-a-half in America trying to get it going, and nothing was happening," Jesse Kongos told Billboard magazine. "Then, all of a sudden, a few stations started to spin us, and that's when it started to change."
