Songfacts®:

  • Following the breakdown of KT Tunstall's marriage to drummer Luke Bullen, she decided to relocate to California, quit the pop music industry and commit to a life of scoring films. However, inspired by the music she was listening to in the Golden State, such as Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell, Tunstall started to write pop tunes again. This is the title track of the resulting album.
  • Asked by HMV.com why she decided on the title of KIN, Tunstall replied: "It's called KIN because it's about coming through all these tectonic shifts in your life and understanding how it all comes together. If all the huge things that happened to me hadn't I'd never be here now and I'm much happier. These events give you more humanity, so KIN is a reference to all those people who think like you do, who see the world in the same way."
