Songfacts®:

  • Kylie Minogue had become popular in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, leading to a massive hit in Australia with her cover of "The Loco-Motion." British producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman then took her on and groomed her for UK pop success. This was her debut single in the UK.
  • Kylie had been signed up a year earlier but when she turned up at the studio Stock, Aitken & Waterman realized they hadn't written any songs for her, so they quickly composed this song. It was written in 10 minutes, and 2 hours later she'd finished recording it.
  • Pete Waterman borrowed the melody from Pachabel's Canon for this.
  • Pete Waterman recalled in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "I was at home one Friday afternoon when I got a phone call from Mike Stock at the office who asked if there was something I had forgotten to tell him. 'A small Antipodean called Kylie Minogue?' prompted Mike, 'Oh yes, I forgot, she's in town.' Mike said, 'No she's in reception.' I apologized for messing up and said we'll have to drop the whole project. Mike said, 'We can't, she's expecting to do something with us.' 'She should be so lucky,' I replied. 'Great,' Mike said, 'That'll do. I Should Be So Lucky. Can we write some lyrics?'" Mike and Pete began faxing lyrics back and forth and the song was quickly finished. The triple echo "lucky, lucky, lucky" at the end of the title was an improvised joke during the recording, which they decided to keep. >>>
