Songfacts®:

  • This country-tinged ballad is about the pain of listening to certain songs that serve as a reminder of a former lover. The track is a duet between Kylie Minogue and her BMG labelmate Jack Savoretti. The song was co-written by both artists alongside its producer Samuel Dixon, who has worked with the likes of Adele, Sia, Carly Rae Jepsen and Christina Aguilera.
  • Savoretti told The Sun that their collaboration came about when the pair was asked to sing an acoustic cover of The Melodians' gospel song "Rivers Of Babylon," which was made famous by Boney M. However, Savoretti was keen to tap into Minogue's strength as she's survived so much heartbreak in the past with broken relationships and her cancer bout. When they met up both agreed they didn't want to do the Boney M number, so Savoretti sat at the piano and played the first verse and chorus of "Music's Too Sad Without You."

At first Kylie thought it was "a bit depressing," but the Aussie singer was feeling reflective, so she asked for the microphone and "totally dived into the song." They completed the song together and a month later, Savoretti got the news that the record was included on Kylie's album.
  • The song's music video, which was directed by Joe Connor, stars both Kylie and Jack Savoretti and was filmed on location at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy.
  • Jack Savoretti's 2019 Singing to Strangers album features a live version of "Music's Too Sad Without You" with Kylie Minogue, which was recorded in Venice.
