  • Released on Kylie's 45th birthday on May 28, 2013, this was the Australian pop superstar's first recording to be made available since signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation earlier in the year. The song was produced by Scottish electro artist Nom De Strip (aka Chris Elliott) and co-written by American singer-songwriter and record producer The-Dream. The latter is known for co-writing such chart topping hits as "Baby" for Justin Bieber, "Umbrella" for Rihanna and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it))" for Beyoncé.
  • This was Kylie's tenth #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart and her seventh consecutive leader dating to "All the Lovers" in 2010.
  • The collaboration came about when Kylie happened to be meeting with her manager, Jay Brown, in the same building that Nom de Strip's label head, Chris Lake was meeting with his. Minogue and Brown chose a tune, "Shake & Bake," from amongst a set Lake played for them. Later that night they went to the studio with Nom De Strip and The-Dream to create a new song from the bass-heavy club track. "I'm really excited that a record like 'Skirt' happened," Lake told Billboard magazine. "It's very daring and really challenging for a casual listener. I'm really glad that [Minogue] had the balls to go ahead and choose the record and put it out."
  • The stop-motion lyric video for "Skirt" was created using more than 1,000 still photos of Kylie posing in a Los Angeles hotel room. The video was directed and photographed by Will Davidson and was released on June 14, 2013.

The video is a series of quick cuts of Minogue posing in a variety of positions, wearing a tight-fitting black dress and Jimmy Choo stilettos. Davidson took the photos over a three-hour period, then edited them together to create the stop-motion effect.
