Songfacts®:

  • Lady A's Hillary Scott wrote this song for her twin daughters, Emory and Betsy, when they were just eight weeks old. The verses are about the things we all struggle with as human beings. The choruses are talking about knowing that at the end of the day, it's all about love, and that's what we want our children to learn.

    The love lifts you up
I know it's hard sometimes to see it, but it does
Oh, it's a power that will rise up, a well that never dries up
The one and only feeling you can trust
So let it be first, let it be us, let it be love

Scott told The Boot the song's message is that love is a choice and we're better off if we choose love in the midst of all the other conflicting emotions. "It's kind of a prayer to my girls, in a way," she added. "Very much keeping myself in check, making sure that I'm leading from that place and not letting anger or envy or a lack of humility be where my decisions are being made from."
  • Scott wrote the song with Jordan Reynolds and Amy Wadge in the basement of her house. She told The Boot that while Wadge is a mother of two daughters, Reynolds is married with no children yet, "but is a super heart-forward human being."
  • "Let It Be Love" and the Charles Kelley-penned "Be Patient With My Love" were two of the early songs written for Ocean. Both have a similar theme of owning your struggles and knowing that love covers all. Kelley told Apple Music: "It really started this conversation of us not just trying to sit here and make a record of what we think are radio hits, but let's just make a record that speaks to us and we'll hopefully speak to the fans."
