Songfacts®:

  • This song about a doomed relationship is one of a number of tracks on Sing To The Moon, which despite a sad lyrical content retains a certain joyous quality. Mvula confessed to Mojo magazine: "I'm quite a melancholic soul. But I want the harmonies to evoke the feeling of immense joy at the same time as the deepest pain."
  • The second verse includes the lyric, "try to write the perfect song for you." In our interview with Mvula, she explained: "There are songs that are successful and they have chart success, or they sell records, or whatever. So there was that sort of tongue-in-cheek meaning: 'Tried to write the perfect song for you, then I realized I didn't belong to you.' I was just having fun with the idea of it. Because I was so new to this industry way of working, these elements - the components of the music industry that most artists are familiar with - for me was all very new. So I was having fun with the idea that you might as well suggest that artists are trying to write perfect songs."
