Songfacts®:

  • This is the first song to be released by LeAnn Rimes following her signing of a new deal with Sony Music's RCA in the UK. "'The Story' is a song that resonates with me as WE are all a part of one collective, universal story," she said. "I fully embrace the journey I am on and have a deeper understanding of how every piece of my story serves a purpose in my evolution as a woman and an artist. This song is not only a love song but a song of self-acceptance and appreciation for life."
  • The song was written by Phil Hanseroth and originally recorded by Brandi Carlile as the title track of her 2007 album.
  • Rimes first heard Carlile's song when it was featured on Grey's Anatomy in the 2011 episode "Song Beneath The Song." While she was working on Remnants, she invited the head of the label, Colin Barlow, to her house and brought up the tune when they were discussing emotional songs. Because it was never a hit in the UK, Barlow had never heard of the song and insisted that Rimes record it.

She told Entertainment Focus: "I never thought about covering it but as I thought about the lyrics and what we were creating as a record, and this being the next phase of my career – new label, new everything – it just kind of felt like these lyrics totally fit."

She added: "Being about love, I look at it as being about self-love in a way and you can totally sing it to yourself. I was in a room full of mirrors at a photoshoot and when there's hundreds of you it turns into this weird emotional thing for me. They were playing this song and I thought I could sing this to myself, I get really emotional. As an artist I think we look at it from many different angles. In this world right now where we're so divided, I think a song like this reminds us that we're all part of the story. Our stories connect and music does that. I think it's a really powerful song."
