Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi learned to play guitar when he was 9 years old, and within three years he was performing live in pubs. He rose to prominence in 2017 when debut single "Bruises" was released and quickly notched up over 25 million plays on Spotify.
By 2018, Capaldi was supporting Sam Smith on tour and headlining a sold-out show at London's 2,000 capacity Shepherd's Bush Empire.
Lewis Capaldi was named as the MTV PUSH: Ones to Watch 2019 winner. He follows in the footsteps of previous MTV Brand New winners such as Mabel, AJ Tracey, Anne-Marie and Krept & Konan.
Capaldi is of Scottish and Italian ancestry, and is a second cousin of the actor Peter Capaldi.
In September 2022, Lewis Capaldi revealed that he had been diagnosed him with Tourette's syndrome. "My shoulder twitches when I am excited, happy, nervous or stressed," he said, "It is something I am living with: it's not as bad as it looks."

The Scottish singer-songwriter added his tics come and go and he's had Botox injections in his shoulder to try to control its movement.

Capaldi took some time off from performing, returning in May 2025 to play some low-key shows in Scotland in support of the mental health organization Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). He made his big-stage return on June 27, 2025 when he returned to Glastonbury as a surprise guest.
In a symbolic gesture tied to his healing process, Lewis Capaldi partnered with BetterHelp to give away 734,000 hours of therapy - 1,000 hours for every day he took off during his two-year break from performing. He credits therapy with helping him stabilize his mental health and get back to doing what he loves.
Lewis Capaldi and Susan Boyle both went to the same school in West Lothian and briefly shared a hairdresser named Caroline. The pair also attended the same church.
