Songfacts®:

  • Lewis Capaldi penned this song after his girlfriend of six months unexpectedly said that she hates him. The stunned singer asked her to cuddle him.

    Hold me while you wait
I wish that I was good enough
If only I could wake you up
My love, my love, my love, my love

Capaldi explained that the song is "about the uncertainty of being in a relationship when your partner isn't sure what they want. There's an impending hopelessness to the whole thing, on both sides, when they're not sure whether they want to be in that relationship or not. For me it's one of the most desperate places you can find yourself in."
  • Capaldi wrote the song with:

London-born singer-sngwriter Jamie N Commons, whose collaboration with X Ambassadors "Jungle" hit the charts worldwide after being used in a promotional commercial for Beats by Dre's Solo2 headphones and the World Cup.

Los Angeles-based songwriter Jamie Hartman, whose other credits include Rag'n'Bone Man's breakthrough single "Human" and Calvin Harris' hit tune "Giant."
  • Lewis Capaldi was midway through performing this ballad during a concert at Manchester's AO Arena on January 18, 2023, when a fight broke out. He was forced to turn the floor lights on and have security escort a woman from the building. "They are scrapping in the crowd there. Erm, we are going to have to get them out. We can't be fighting," he told the crowd. "What a weird song to fight to. Bizarre, bizarre."
