Songfacts®:

  • In this stripped-down, acoustic-guitar ballad, Lewis Capaldi bares his soul and talks about feeling trapped in his own mind. Despite achieving levels of fame and success, the Scottish singer-songwriter still struggles with self-esteem issues he's had for a long time. He's disappointed that he hasn't figured everything out by now and often spends his days consumed by doubt and anxiety.
  • During the first show of his 2023 Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent Tour in Leeds, Capaldi introduced "How I'm Feeling Now" by acknowledging his struggles with anxiety, saying: "It's no secret that I'm quite an anxious fella. This is the best job in the world; I love doing what I do. But I'd be lying if I said that sometimes things didn't kinda get on top of me every now and then. So, 'How I'm Feeling Now' is a song that I wrote about that, and I hope that you like it."
  • Lewis Capaldi worked on the song with TMS, a trio comprising Benjamin Kohn, Tom Barnes, and Pete Kelleher, who have been instrumental in his rise to fame. Their previous collaborations include some of his biggest hits, such as "Someone You Loved," "Before You Go" and "Forget Me."

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso also contributed to the writing of the song. Jesso is known for his work with Adele, having co-written "When We Were Young" and "To Be Loved."
  • Capaldi released "How I'm Feeling Now" as the third single off Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent on March 17, 2023. It's the closing track and the last song he wrote for the record. "Obviously I completely recognize how lucky I am to have the life I do and I know there are people in much worse positions than I am out there but as much as the last five years have been the best of my life," the singer tweeted prior to dropping the song. "I would be lying if I said it all hasn't taken its toll mentally and honestly, there have been some extremely low points and that's what this song is about."
  • The song plays in the trailer for Capaldi's documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now. The Joe Pearlman-directed film follows the singer through the motions of creating his sophomore album.
