  • In June 2023, Lewis Capaldi announced he was stepping back from music. Diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome and visibly struggling with his mental health, Capaldi took a break to take care of himself.

He did reappear briefly in January 2024 to release "Strangers," a track from the deluxe edition of his second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent. Then came radio silence.

"Survive" is Capaldi's comeback single. Following a series of low-pressure performances across Scotland as a guest of Tom Walker's charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), he released the song on June 27, 2025.
  • "Survive" is a ballad about scraping yourself back together, emotionally duct-taped but still upright. The lyrics are direct and honest, drawn from a stretch in Capaldi's life that culminated at Glastonbury 2023 when his vocal tics overwhelmed him mid-performance. What could've been a disaster turned instead into a human moment for the ages – thousands of festival goers sang for him while he struggled through.

"The last two years haven't been the best for me," Capaldi said. "It's been difficult at times. I wanted to write a song that was about overcoming that stuff and getting over the other side of it."
  • Capaldi co-wrote the song with Rømans, the same pen behind his mega-hit "Someone You Loved." Rømans also co-produced the track with Peter Fenn, Andrew Wells, and the McDonough brothers (Connor and Riley).
  • The music video, directed by Hector Dockrill (Jorja Smith, Sam Fender), is a raw, documentary-style piece. He previously shot the video for Capaldi's 2022 single "Pointless."
  • Capaldi debuted the song at the Glastonbury Festival on June 27, 2025 (the same day the song was released) where he made a surprise appearance, returning to the big stage for the first time since his 2023 Glastonbury performance that he had to cut short. "I'm not going to say much up here today because if I did, I might start crying," he told the crowd.
  • "Survive" debuted at #1 on the UK Singles chart. It was Capaldi's sixth UK chart-topper, following "Someone You Loved" (2019), "Before You Go" (2020), "Forget Me" (2022), "Pointless" (2023) and "Wish You The Best" (2023).
