Songfacts®:

  • Recorded in Jamaica with reggae producer Stephen McGregor, "Midnight" features a climatic, high vocal from La Havas. "I actually didn't know I could do that. But during the writing process, I thought, 'What if it goes up an octave?' I just tried it and was so relaxed there," she told The Observer. "Also, the humidity helps the singing in a weird way. The trip made me feel more independent."
  • Lianne La Havas (from The Sun): "'Midnight' is central to Blood. I love that song as it's got harmonics in it and the melody is really indulgent. It's the song I've always wanted to make and that song is the crux of the album.

It relates to the album title and me finding confidence, which the music has really helped me to do. It's made me realize that making music is what I want to do forever. I don't enjoy doing anything else and nothing else would bring me as much true, pure happiness.

Music actually feels like a drug. Making a song like 'Midnight' brought me that feeling. So now I search for that feeling with every song I write."
