Songfacts®:

  • This is the second single from Lil Wayne's album Tha Carter IV. The Polow Da Don produced track features rapper Rick Ross and finds Weezy picturing his demise. "If I die today," he spits, "It'd be a holiday."
  • The song is a re-imagining of Rick Ross' "I'm Not a Star" from the Miami rapper's 2010 Teflon Don album, which was one of the first numbers Wayne heard after being released from prison. Weezy liked the track so much that he decided to record his own version. His interpretation features a new verse from Ross but keeps J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League's production, though Polow Da Don pitched it up a bit and added a new synth line.
  • The song's music video was directed by Colin Tilley and filmed inside an abandoned warehouse and outside on a dock in Miami. Tilley, who previous worked with Wayne on the Look At Me Now clip, told MTV News: "When I first talked to Wayne about the video, we had just done the 'Look at Me Now' video, and he really liked the whole feel of that video, how there was just so much goin' on and just the whole energy and colors and all that. That's pretty much what they gave me when they gave me the song. They were like, 'We just love that energy and we want that whole vibe from it.'"
  • Ross became the second rapper in a space of a few months to name-check artist Jean-Michel Basquiat when he invoked a bloodbath in his verse: "Red on the wall, Basquiat when I paint." Previously Kanye West, who's a devotee of the late artist, rapped on The Throne track, "That's My Bitch," "You say I care more about them basquion's, basquiats."
  • The song is named for John Lennon, as Wayne wants to remembered like the late Beatle. He spat: "If I die today, remember me like John Lennon/Buried in Louis, I'm talkin' all brown linen."
