Songfacts®:

  • This novelty tune was big during the Music Hall era in England, where it was performed by Lily Morris, who specialized in the genre. The song is about a 20-year-old chambermaid who takes up with the much older owner of the inn, who becomes her sugar daddy. She explains his unlikely behavior - lavishing her with gifts, taking her on trips - by saying it's all because he loves her.
  • This was written by Harry Castling, who wrote many popular Music Hall songs. Morris also recorded his songs "Turned Up" and "Don’t Have Any More, Mrs. Moore."
  • Dora Bryan sang this in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey, in which she starred. Her version was released as the B-side of her 1964 single "Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Seven." >>>
