Songfacts®:

  • But you won't let me breathe
    And I'm not ever right
    All we are is talking
    Over each other

"Over Each Other" captures a romance fraying at the seams, unraveling in slow, deliberate fashion. Lead vocalist Emily Armstrong is our narrator, exhausted and exasperated, navigating the emotional wreckage of a relationship at its breaking point.
  • This is the letter that I, I didn't write
Lookin' for color in the black and white

Emily Armstrong starts off the song by mournfully using black and white to represent her emptiness and sadness. Fans will be reminded of 2017's "Invisible," where Mike Shinoda declares:

This is not black and white
    Only organized confusion

On "Invisible," Shinoda is warning his children that life is not black and white. Rather it's full of surprises and there are no clear answers for plenty of things.
  • Linkin Park wrote the song with British songwriter Jon Green (Lady A's "Hurt," Kylie Minogue's "Say Something," Calvin Harris and Rag'n'Bone Man's "Lovers In A Past Life") and Matias Mora.

Green's previous contributions towards Linkin Park's oeuvre include the One More Light tracks "Nobody Can Save Me" and "Battle Symphony" and the Papercuts song "Friendly Fire."
  • Linkin Park released "Over Each Other" is the third single from their eighth album, From Zero. It is their first record to feature Emily Armstrong on vocals and Colin Brittain on drums.
  • "Over Each Other" starts with a stark, haunting intro. It builds gradually - a flickering candle that eventually flares into a full blaze in the climactic chorus. Co-vocalist and producer Mike Shinoda told BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders that the song was one of the first they wrote for From Zero, yet it only found its "true" form after the band had added Armstrong and new drummer Colin Brittain to the lineup. "In the beginning, we didn't even know what our final lineup would be," Shinoda explained.

The song, Shinoda added, evolved through different versions, starting with a demo with just his vocals before morphing into a more collaborative piece, though ultimately, the version with Armstrong singing it all the way down proved to be the definitive one.
  • The video was directed by Linkin Park's DJ Joe Hahn, who helmed many of the band's classic music videos including, those for "Numb," "What I've Done" and "Somewhere I Belong." It was shot in South Korea after Linkin Park's September 28, 2024, concert in the country. The clip has a K-drama feel, embracing Korean aesthetics.

The video finds Armstrong emerging from the wreckage of a motor accident, her partner slumped unconscious beside her. We eventually learn the cause of the crash: the two had been arguing while Armstrong was driving the car.
  • Linkin Park performed "Over Each Other" live for the first time during their November 3, 2024, concert at La Défense Arena in Paris, France.
