Songfacts®:

  • This was written by lead singer Chester Bennington from his wife Talinda Bentley's point of view. He relates how Talinda must have felt as she watched him battle his inner demons.

    I admit I made mistakes
But yours might cost you everything
Can't you hear me calling you home?
  • Bennington has spoken openly about his struggles with drug abuse, alcohol addictions and anxiety at various times during his life as well as emotional problems resulting from being molested by an older man over several years when he was a child. In 2015, he told Rock Sound.

"I literally hated life. I was like, 'I don't want to have feelings. I want to be a sociopath. I don't want to do anything. I don't want to care what other people feel like. I want to feel nothing.'"
  • Linkin Park premiered the track at the Maximus Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 6, 2017.
  • The Mark Fiore-directed video follows Linkin Park performing the song live and recording in the studio. The clip was released on July 20, 2017 and later that day, Chester Bennington was found dead by apparent suicide. There are a number of shots showing Bennington performing to the band's rapt fans, which serve as a poignant tribute to his prowess as a frontman.
  • Linkin Park singer Mike Shinoda spoke to Waves about creating the drum sound on the track. "That was a very delicate blend of live and sampled sounds on the kick and snare," he said. "It's mostly in the recording, but there were samples added under the kick and snare that give it that punch. My original drum sound was a little bit grimier and raw on the first few mixes with [mixing engineer] Manny Marroquin. But as we mixed the rest of the album, that song seemed too dirty. Manny went back in and added another sample underneath the kick and snare, and dried up the overall shape, which helped it cut through and feel more defined."
  • This is the second single from Linkin Park's seventh studio album, which peaked at #1 in the US. In December 2017, the band issued One More Light Live, which was recorded during the European leg of their tour just one month before Bennington's suicide.
