Songfacts®:

  • Lissie Maurus is an American folk rock artist who records under the name of Lissie. In early 2008 Lenny Kravitz invited her to be the opening act for his Love Revolution Tour, after a friend tipped him about her MySpace page. She recorded her debut album Catching a Tiger in Nashville, Tennessee with Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Modest Mouse) and in Asheville, North Carolina, with Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses.
  • The song originally appeared on Lissie's 2009 debut Bill Reynolds produced EP Why You Runnin', which came out on roots label Fat Possum and was titled after a lyric on this track.
  • The Sun asked Lissie about the lyric "Why you runnin'"? in the climax of this song. She replied: "It's directed at the man I'm singing about in the song and asking him: 'Why are you running away?' But it's also directed at myself - why am I running? What am I running from? Why am I afraid when I need to go for it? They're questions everyone should ask themselves."
  • During an interview with CMU when promoting Catching a Tiger, Lissie was asked what process she goes through in creating a track. She replied: "It's all just come together through the creation of this album and I think I'm still perfecting my process. I used to just write a song by myself when I felt like it or had something to say. But I also like it when someone gives me a loop of music and I just freestyle melody and lyric ideas over it on tape. Sometimes that can end up being the base of a track that is then added to, but usually it's a way of finishing the writing of a song. Then to record it, I would hope to sit down and play live with a band, then maybe have to overdub some bits in. That's ideal, but sometimes it's just me playing the rhythm guitar and singing my lead and harmonies and letting my producer layer it with goodness afterwards. At this point, it's always different and I'm still trying to figure out what's best."
